FORMER MAYOR SABATINO ANNOUNCES RUN

FOR BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

Former Modesto Mayor Carmen Sabatino today announced his intention to seek election to the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors, in District 4, which consists of the area of urban Modesto running from downtown to the Stanislaus River.

The seat is currently held by one term incumbent Dick Monteith.

“I will work to keep taxes stable during the tough times ahead,” he said.  “During my term as Mayor of Modesto, we delivered a balanced budget every year – this came after 19 previous years of deficit spending.  We did this by working to bring government back to serving basic needs.  We paved more streets during those four years than had been paved in the previous decade.  We improved public safety services, while holding expenditures in check.  That is the leadership approach that I will bring to County government.”

Sabatino expressed particular concern about the preservation of Stanislaus County’s dwindling prime farm land.  “I will work closely with Supervisor DeMartini in opposing the West Park development boondoggle on the County’s West Side,” he said.  “The wealth of our County is our rich agricultural land, and we must preserve what remains of that productive land.  It provides exports to the rest of the world.”

“I have strongly opposed ill-conceived schemes such as the proposal to put fluoride into our drinking water and the initiative that would have added to the sales tax burden in the County.  I not only opposed water fluoridation, I also gave the voters the opportunity to reject fluoridation of their water at the ballot box.  I exposed a $19 million overcharge on garbage rates that would have gone to create a mega-dump for the entire West Coast.  I exposed $100 million in uncollected developer fees for Village One.  I mediated a settlement that saved the Modesto Symphony when its very existence was in jeopardy.

“I have paid a high price for the courage to stand up to numerous special interests on behalf of the working people, retirees and small business people in the County.  I am fully prepared to continue working for those taxpayers as a County Supervisor.”
