It looks like the BEE has come to the Taxpayers’ table, and we heartily applaud it! The opinion in today’s BEE, “No tax money in campaigns” is right on target. While we ruefully regret the fact that the BEE has been silent on this issue in the past, our motto is, “Come to the table. Come early or come late, just come to the table.” You may remember that this exact issue was one of the compelling reasons the Association fought against Measures K and S. The fact that the Alliance spent about $500,000 of taxpayer money on those horrible campaigns still riles us. The City of Modesto was ordered by the Alliance to fork over $161,000 in State Transit Funds to fund the S campaign, and in our view, that was a crime. The City Manager’s response to our protest was for us to pound sand. I would ask the BEE to check into a similarly repugnant misuse of Taxpayer funds by the current City Manager. You may remember the flyer I sent recently, which was paid for by the City. It is a request for the neighbors of Councilman Brad Hawn to answer a questionnaire. This expenditure of well over $1,000 and hours of city employee time is simply unacceptable. The perception that a sitting Councilman could get this kind of preferential treatment is ugly. Similarly, the fact that the Parks Director is willing to fall on her sword over this travesty does not make it acceptable. The Stanislaus Taxpayers Association fully expects the signatories of this flyer to reimburse the Taxpayers for this grossly inappropriate misuse of public funds. I hope the BEE stands on its currently announced principles and demands the same. Thank you very much, Dave Thomas, President, Stanislaus Taxpayers Association.

The goal of the letter is probably noble, and sent in good faith. However, the box at the bottom of the letter is written by Julie Hannon, a city employee. It tells us “...the city has paid for...” this letter and its mailing costs. I submit that this expenditure of taxpayer funds is a gift of those funds, and therefore is illegal. Thus, on behalf of the Stanislaus Taxpayers Association, I make the following request under the tenants of the California Public Records Act, Govt. Code Section 6250-6276.48: 1. Please provide us with the names of those city officials who authorized this expenditure. If there is a council resolution, that document will suffice. 2. Please provide the names of any and all city employees who worked on the creation of the letter and its printing, folding, stuffing, addressing and any other activities associated with the creation and handling of said letter. 3. Please provide us with all costs associated with the activities in #2. Include all labor costs, all handling costs, all printing costs, the cost of all supplies and all mail/postage costs. Please remind Ms. Hannon that the city NEVER pays for ANYTHING. It is the taxpayers of Modesto who bear the cost of every governmental activity, and employees are simply prohibited from spending any tax money on personal favors or any non-authorized project. The fact is that other neighborhoods have engaged in organizing with no expenditures by the city made on their project. Moreover, this expenditure is clearly and substantially tainted by the fact that one of the beneficiaries is Brad Hawn, a sitting councilman and candidate for Mayor of Modesto. This apparent gift might be seen as evidence of favoritism or cronyism, and must stop. Thank you for your consideration. Dave Thomas, President, Stanislaus Taxpayers Association.

MODESTO SHOULD BE A PLACE OF NEW BEGINNINGS LET PEOPLE CAMP MODESTO/STANISLAUS COUNTY THREE TIMES LATELY, STANISLAUS COUNTY HAS TRIED TO CONVICT PEOPLE FOR THE CRIME OF CAMPING ON PUBLIC LAND. THREE TIMES THE CAMPERS WON FAVORABLE VERDICTS FROM THE JURRORS. THIS TELLS ME THERE IS A GOOD AMOUNT OF SENTIMENT FOR ALLOWING PEOPLE TO CAMP WHEN THEY HAVE THE NEED TO DO SO. WHY COULDN’T WE CREATE A PLACE WHERE ANYONE COULD CAMP LEGALLY FOR LITTLE OR NO MONEY. WE COULD HAVE BATHROOM FACILITIES, LAUNDRY FACILITIES, AND GARBAGE COLLECTION. A COMMUNITY GARDEN COULD BE PLANTED AND MAINTAINED BY THE RESIDENTS. THE RESIDENTS COULD BE GIVEN A MAILING ADDRESS WHERE MAIL COULD BE DELIVERED. CHILDREN COULD BE BUSSED TO SCHOOL. THE RESIDENTS COULD BE TARGETED BY SOCIAL SERVICES FOR ASSISTANCE AND JOB TRAINING. MODESTO/STANISLAUS COUNTY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPOVERISHED AREAS IN AMERICA. LET’S ALLOW PEOPLE TO MAKE A NEW START IN OUR AREA. BY RAISING UP OUR MOST STRUGGLING RESIDENTS, WE ELEVATE ALL RESIDENTS IN OUR AREA. MODESTO/STANISLAUS COUNTY IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR. IT WOULD BE GOOD POLICY TO HELP OUR STRUGGLING RESIDENTS RATHER THAN TRYING TO MAKE THEIR STRUGGLE A CRIME. TUX

DRESS HER UP AND SHE'S STILL A PIG MODESTO BEE PUTS LIPSTICK ON A PIG THE PIG IS VILLAGE ONE We all know the story of Village One. All the broken promises, and changes in plans that are costing home owners to this day. Village One is exactly what is wrong with our local politicians being controlled by the building industry. This control extends so far, that the Modesto Bee seems to be actively involved in putting lip stick on a pig. It seems like advertising dollars are more important than reporting the truth, so we will get the propaganda. The public needs to see through this, and realize that Village One will always be a prime example of a large development gone bad. Any attempt at trying to say that Village One is a success story is like putting lipstick on a pig. Tux
