MELLO-ROOS RIP OFF MUST STOP

OR VOTERS WILL NEVER SUPPORT

SCHOOL BONDS AGAIN

The recent revelations that home owners in Village One are being overcharged for Mello-Roos school taxes is ominous news for our struggling schools in what seems more like a depression than a recession. No matter how broke our school systems find themselves to be, it is never ok for them to take more from homeowners than is legally allowed. I am glad to hear that the Sylvan Schools have decided to find a way to not continue this rip off. Empire needs to follow suit, and stop this practice, or risk alienating the voters. The voters have a long memory, and any thought of passing further school bonds anywhere in the Central Valley hinges upon the proper application of the agreement that limits the amount the homeowners can be charged. Our students deserve the best schools and instruction that we can provide. This money must be collected in a legal and logical way, or the very future of our schools will be compromised by the backlash from our voters that are trying to survive their own financial challenges. Future law suits from overcharged homeowners could cost millions. The time to act is now.       Tux

                   Good morning my friends.

Two members of the Stanislaus Taxpayers Association (STA) and some very engaged members of the public met in an ad hoc meeting on Thursday morning.  While we discussed several taxpayer’s issues, the MID became the primary subject.  A very brief summary of our discussion was that the MID is on a road that will destroy home ownership and paralyze business.

After looking at the facts, this citizen’s group came to the realization that the MID has embarked on a course of action that will increase your cost of electricity by a factor of at least 200%.  That means, if your highest monthly summer MID electricity bill is now $250, it will soon be $500.  But, there is a possibility that it will be $750!!

MID has published the fact that it has decided to “invest” in “green” energy in an “aggressive” way.  They said that in 2010, MID (this means you) will spend $4,000,000 on green energy.  But in 2014, MID (this means you) will spend $43,000,000, a factor of TEN TIMES today’s cost.  What do you think is going to happen to your electricity costs THREE YEARS from now???

MID has already committed to a joint venture with a start-up solar power company to build a huge solar farm on north McHenry Ave.  Solar is THE most expensive way to generate power, it is THE LEAST reliable way to generate power, and it is THE least efficient method of generating power.  In spite of the facts, MID has agreed to a 25 YEAR GUARANTEE with this company.  The agreement includes a rate SURCHARGE that is higher than MID’s current cost of generating power.  YOU WILL PAY THIS SURCHARGE.  Did you agree with this incredible deal?

MID is now proposing a joint deal to build a BioMass burner to generate electricity right in the middle of Modesto.  MID and the BioMass company agree that this plant will be a gross polluter, right in the middle of Modesto.  They also agree that the electricity created by this plant will be VERY EXPENSIVE.

So, did you agree to put a gross polluter, which will poison your air, next to your home?

Do you want to protest this gross affront to our communal sensibilities?

Do you want to be victimized by increases in your electricity costs by 200%, or 300% or even 400%??

If not, let the MID know.  Call them, e-mail them, write them, and visit them.  Tell them that this “aggressive pursuit of green energy” is a diabolical assault on your health and your wallet.

                    Thank you very much, Dave

I JUST HAD TO VENT A LITTLE BIT.....EXCUSE ME

To Dave Geer, Dave Geer,

From:

Dave Thomas ( This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it )

Dave, I hope you take my comments as a friend of many years.

My free advice is that you divorce yourself from the bureaucrats in the city government.  Modesto is so totally mismanaged that it is a laughing stock.  When you vote with the city manager, you invite the comment from our recently deceased friend, John Michael Flint, “The city council is just a display of sock puppets.”

Note, that is not my comment, but a discrete and credible assessment from a highly respected published journalist, John Michael Flint.

Let me give you some free advice.  The following is a direct quote attributed to you from today’s Modesto BEE’s story regarding reduced fees for city CFF’s.

“I am a fiscal conservative and believe taxes are too high, and that includes fees.  I am comfortable with a six-month suspension (of developer fees).  If it doesn’t show an increase in business activity, then it would make sense to go back to the normal fees.

Dave, that is the reasoning of an idiot, so I reject the possibility that you said that.  After all, one who truly believes that reducing fees and taxes stimulates the economy, would never suggest that raising those fees and taxes would work better.  So, I am confident that the attribution is incorrect.  Would you confirm that for me?

You campaigned on the concept of representing your District.  Reducing fees to developers will only delay needed construction and up-grading of infrastructure in your District.  I am sure that you do not want to give developers in the north and east part of Modesto a gift of lower fees.  To do so would betray your constituents.

Please tell me that you do not support favoring developers over the needs of the residents of your District.

                   Thank you so much,  Dave

Good afternoon.  I want to be fair (as always) in what I have to say today.  The BEE has published several very good news stories and editorial opinions, both over time and recently.  The StanCERA debacle, Village 1, several school district problems, crime, and other issues have been dealt with very well.  My comment is that the BEE has missed some very critical issues, especially when Modesto City management is the issue.  It simply cannot be a secret that our City is VERY poorly managed.  Even when we see an apparent improvement in how the gang crime problem is being addressed by the new police chief, the fact is that his solution is working far better than the idolized former chief, who could do no wrong in the eyes of the BEE.

Let us look at yesterday’s editorial.  It says, “The media must continue to serve that watchdog role, as they recently did in Bell.  But new hounds can’t do it alone.”  I agree.  That is why I, and others in leadership positions in the Stanislaus Taxpayers Association, have tried to communicate serious problems in our city and county.  Let’s deal with several issues that have gone either unreported or reported inadequately.

1.     My monthly water bill prior to the Nov 2004 increase was $23.08.  According to my new meter, last months’ usage cost me $108.80.  The STA told every one who would listen, including the mayor/council and the BEE, that water rates would triple over the next several years.  We had mathematical proof.  Since then, demand for water by City system users has decreased 20%, back to 1997 levels, but our rates have increased four-fold, and there is $100,000,000 in the water fund.  There is so much money there, they are buying the new IT system with it.  We also know they are importing administrative costs from the finance dept and others, in violation of Prop 218.  The BEE ignores this story.

2.     MID has published the fact that in 2010, MID will spend $4 Million on green energy.  But in 2014, it will spend $43 Million on green energy.  Even though MID admits that there is no mandate for “Public Owned Utilities” to ramp up green energy capacity, MID will “aggressively pursue the acquisition of green energy”.  This decision will cost 10 times what current costs are, and they cheerfully admit it.

3.     The McHenry solar farm is a sham.  No one in his right mind would make a 25 year contract at a cost hugely in excess of current costs, on a product whose costs are plummeting.

4.     The BioMass generator plant in the Beard Tract will cost MID customers a fortune.  The owner of that plant’s own filed documents admit that the plant will operate out of compliance with EPA and Air Board limitations on pollutants.  That plant is situated right in the heart of our City.  In fact, the dog and pony show at tomorrow’s MID special meeting, is going to give grossly false information regarding both amounts of fuel available and amount of pollutants.

These stories alone should be worth at least one Pulitzer.  I would hope those of us who are truly engaged in civic matters would disprove the title of yesterday’s editorial.  We civic minded citizens, working on our own time and money, CANNOT DO IT ALONE.  We need the help of a committed newspaper, whose dedicated reporters tell our story as well as what the bureaucrats fabricate.

Please, we want your help.  If you cannot do that, then do not publish an opinion that fails to recognize our good work.   Thank you very much, Dave Thomas, President, STA

TRY DIFFERENT APPROACH WITH HOMELESS

IN YOUR HEART YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT, OR IS THAT ACTUALLY LEFT?

WHY NOT GIVE THE HOMELESS

A PLACE TO CAMP?

Tom Milam’s letter to the editor in the Modesto Bee describes a problem that exists that affects everyone in our town. Homelessness and poverty have driven people to living behind garages and in bushes. This creates a terrible mess, and potential for much worse.

Homelessness in Modesto is a fact of life. Even in the best of times, we have a large number of unemployed residents. Modesto should provide a place where people can camp without the threat of eviction or arrest. Our current Modesto City Council seems bent on being tough on the poor and disadvantaged people of our community. I suggest a completely different approach. How we treat the poor is a reflection on our community, and our values. We may be just a little bit too conservative in Modesto for our own good. Let’s quit trying to make the homeless go away, and actually deal with the problem that exists.   Tux
